Aerification at Baker Hill
Spring and fall coring is necessary to remove excessive buildup of organic layers called thatch. At Baker Hill, we will typically aerify greens with 3/8" tines twice per season twice per season. These small holes heal faster than the traditional 1/2" or 5/8" holes.

We then verticut the plugs to break up the attached soil then blow off the reamining thatch. The greens are then topdressed heavily to fill in approximately 50% of the holes, brushed, rolled and mowed. Heavy topdressing usually dulls mowers and this keeps our Equipment Supervisor very busy. We do all this
and maintain the rest of the course for regular play.

Tees are aerified twice annually as well, but our abundant tee surfaces will help us not to interfere with your game.
Fairways aerification and clean-up is much more time consuming so scheduling is difficult. We have decided to contract out our fairway aerification to minimize the disruption of play.

Aerification Dates

Greens aerification is usually the first Tuesday in May and the Tuesday following Labor Day.
Last Week of August weather permitting- start fairway aerification process.

Aerification is one of the most important management procedures available to golf courses. Although it may be viewed as a disruption to golfers, the long term gains for the course are worth the short term disorder.

Without aerification the course becomes rough, greens thin out and the quality of play is reduced.

The benefits of aerification are:
• Improved turfgrass rooting.
* Decomposition of harmful thatch.
• Better penetration of moisture, oxygen and nutrients through the thatch layer.
• Decreased water runoff for improved drought resistance.
• Loosens compacted spoils due to traffic.
• Dilutes salts built-up in the soil.
• Greens drain better.
