Who started Baker Hill?
The Baker Hill Golf Club was started in 1998 by five dedicated golfers who recognized the need for a first-class private equity golf club in the New London/Sunapee region. These five and twenty-one additional founders provided the initial funding for the club.

Why was another golf course needed?
A new course was needed for several reasons. First, there was no private, equity-interest club in the area. Second, there is a great demand for golf in the New London/Sunapee area. All the courses (with the exception of Baker Hill) require tee times, and golf rounds that last five hours or more are common. The Founders of Baker Hill Golf Club wanted a golf course with a small membership so tee times would be unnecessary.

Does Baker Hill have tennis or swimming?
No. Baker Hill is not a country club. It is devoted solely to golf.

Where is the course located?
The Baker Hill Golf Club is located on 260 acres of land on Baker Hill in Newbury, New Hampshire. The hillside setting provides spectacular views of surrounding mountains and Lake Sunapee. The course is close to New London, Sunapee, Sutton, Wilmot, Warner and Bradford. It is also close to I-89, making it easily accessible from Concord and the Upper Valley towns of Hanover and Lebanon.

How do you get to the course?
From North or South, follow Interstate 89 to Exit 11. Go west on King Hill Road for 2.4 miles to 103A. Turn left and continue on 103A for 1.4 miles. Turn left on Baker Hill Road. The Club is 0.6 miles on the right.

When did the course open?
Nine holes opened for play in 2001, and the full eighteen holes were available for play in June of 2002.

Who designed the golf course?
Rees Jones, one of the world's most renowned golf course architects, designed the Baker Hill golf course. Jones has designed or renovated over 100 golf courses. He is nicknamed "The Open Doctor" because he has renovated so many U.S. Open courses. Golf Digest consistently includes him on its list of the five top golf course architects. (More on Rees Jones.)

What are the outstanding features of the golf course?
The course is challenging yet fair. It is a "strategic" rather than a "target" golf course, which follows the natural contours of the land. Rees Jones believes in allowing the golfer to see the intended target and visualize the shot. He has designed the course so that there are no blind shots and no hidden obstacles. The course has five sets of tees to accommodate golfers of varying skills. The novice will find the course to be extremely playable and enjoyable, while the low handicap player will find it a true test of golf. (View the course layout.)

Will homes be built on the golf course?
No homes or condominiums will be built on the golf course. The secluded, wooded setting is one of the great assets of Baker Hill. With no noise or visual distractions, a round of golf at Baker Hill is a tranquil experience, a real escape from the pressures of everyday life.

Does the club have tee times?
No. At Baker Hill, golfers can play whenever they choose. The club is limited to 225 memberships to avoid the need for tee times.

Who is the Golf Pro?
Mark Ashton. A graduate of the University of Vermont, Mark pursued a career in business before deciding to become a golf professional. He has become well known in the area for his teaching skills, and golfers of all abilities have benefited from his instruction. Before coming to Baker Hill, Mark was the assistant pro at the Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. (More on BHGC Professional, Mark Ashton.)

Can beginning golfers join the club?
Yes. Beginners are very welcome. The club has instituted a popular clinic for beginners and those who are returning to the game after a long layoff. These clinics include instruction on the practice range as well as playing lessons on the golf course.

What are the practice facilities like? Is there an extra charge for use of the range?
Baker Hill has an excellent two-tiered driving range with five “target” greens and a large putting green. The club also has a separate short game practice area with a bunker and green for chipping and pitching. There is no extra charge for use of the practice facilities; it is included with the dues.

Do you have a clubhouse and pro shop?

Over the winter of 2002-2003, a historic barn on the property was renovated to serve as the pro shop, and a Timberpeg clubhouse was constructed to meet the needs of the membership. The clubhouse site provides panoramic views of the mountains, the lake, and the starting and finishing holes of the front and back nines. The clubhouse has locker room facilities, kitchen, dining area, snack bar, and a porch and wrap-around deck for gathering after golf.

What is the club's policy on walking?
Walking is encouraged at Baker Hill, and golfers may walk at all times. Courtesy carts are available to assist golfers on a lengthy walk between the 11th, 12th and 13th holes and a short but steep climb after the 18th hole. Baker Hill has a fleet of golf carts that may be rented daily or annually.

Do you allow outside groups to play the course?
Outside groups are not permitted at Baker Hill. However, as part of the Club's endeavor to contribute to the good of the community, Baker Hill hosts a few charity events each year.

What is the guest policy?
Guests must play with a member. With the exception of visiting family members, a guest may play a maximum of six days per season. Play during Member-Guest tournaments is not counted as one of the six days.

What activities does the club have for the members?
The club has a full schedule of activities including a men’s day on Wednesday mornings, a women’s day on Thursday mornings for both nine- and eighteen-holers, twilight golf for couples, twilight golf for men, a three-day men’s member-guest, a mixed member-guest, several one-day member-guests for men and women, and several club championships (juniors, men, women, masters and mixed). In addition, special tournaments are held almost every weekend.

Does Baker Hill have any special programs for junior golfers?

Yes. Mark Ashton and his staff have developed a strong junior program. Clinics are held two days a week for four different groups: ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-13, and 14-17. The clinics include instruction and supervised play on the golf course.
